Overview of Renewable Energy

Renewable energy is growing at a rapid pace, and increasing numbers of businesses are being launched which attempt to commercialize renewable energy allowing more and more people to begin going green. Certain renewable energies are thriving, such as hydropower, solar power, and wind power, while others need to be perfected before they can be marketed competitively.
Besides being good for the environment, the costs associated with renewable energies are often lower than their mainstream counterparts. Newer technologies are still too expensive to be used widely, but as more research is conducted, they will be able to be sufficiently competitive. (See: Can You Save Money Going Green?)
Many people believe that renewable energy is a futuristic concept, and that not much of it is here today. However, you can find examples of our widespread utilization of alternative energies throughout the world. Almost one fifth of the world’s energy supply comes from renewable energies, and that statistic is steadily rising as oil becomes an obsolete choice.
To further harness the Earth’s and the sun’s resources, many solar plants and wind farms have been established, mainly in Europe. Over the next ten years, the number of renewable energy projects is expected to rise greatly.
One of the most rampant forms of alternative fuel is ethanol, which is primarily being made from corn currently. Brazil is notorious for having ethanol provide a large portion of their fuel, eighteen percent to be exact. Most cars in other countries can run on mixes of gasoline and ethanol, although not in extravagant ratios (the limit is usually 10% ethanol). There is a lot of debate about whether ethanol is a good renewable fuel, because all the corn that is put in to making ethanol is food that cannot be consumed by humans. There are several other biofuel sources along with corn, so if those can be utilized as well, there will not be so much need for one single crop.
